At that time of night, I would recommend either staying in Pisa (I don't know about hotels there) or driving to Lucca. The 20 mile drive to Lucca should take about 30 minutes. The driving time to Monterosso (about 60 miles) will be about 90 minutes. Linda and Don Freedman wrote interesting, detailed travelogues of their 1996 and 1998 travels about this area (and others). You will find very helpful information there for you trip planning. If I recall correctly, they enjoyed their stay at a Monterosso al Mare and spoke well of the hotel where they stayed. They also had good things to say about the hotel where they stayed in Lucca.

In addition to the Freedmans' favorable comments about La Querce, others have spoken quite well of the La Querce hotel which is in the town of Chiusi. The restaurant there also receives very positive comments; and, it is very well-located. Its location will enable you to get to Pienza, Montepulciano and the Chianti area with ease. Too, Orvieto to the south and Siena to the west are easy drives from Chiusi. Peter in NJ
