|Subject: Re: Planning a trip to South Africa- would be grateful for information|
I travelled in South Africa in Summer 1994. It was definitely one of the best trips I've ever made. I rented a car in Johannesburg and drove to Transvaal and Kruger Park, then south through Swaziland to Natal region, where I visited Huluwe game reserve and Durban. From Durban I took a flight to Port Elisabeth. There I continued my drive on the Garden Route down to Cape Town.
Don't miss absolutely Kruger Park, it's wonderful. Even if it's not as spectacular as Tanzanian parks, you'll have the chance to see some animals that are very difficult to see in Kenya or Tanzania (e.g. white rhinos). Private game reserves will give you outstanding service and certainty of seeing the big five and hunting scenes. But also some days in the Kruger park will be fun, as you have the chance to drive around and find animals by yourself.
In Transvaal, don't miss Blyde River Canyon.
Garden Route, Cape Town and the cape peninsula are other places to be absolutely visited.
When I was there I felt very safe and I didn't have any problem. Anyway, some colleagues who went in South Africa recently told me that crime is rising and some places are not as safe as before.
I will try to find the address and phone number of the local travel agent who handled our tour and who worked very well.
