Rick, I hope you don't think that Sicily still has last centuries streets!
While it can be possible having troubles in parking in some extremely touristic area during the peak
season (you may have to walk a bit to reach the town center or the main beach), it is not required to have a Jeep in order to move around! Any normal car is fine.
About food, try the pastries (again!). Messina is famous for its sweets (cannoli, cassata, but also pignolata, bianco e nero, .....) and granite.
