I can thoroughly recommend Oaxaca! Great for extended stays, especially if
you wish to study Spanish. There are many apartments to rent because of the
language school and a community of ex-pats. A charming city of 500,000 in
the mountains, elevation 5000 ft. A great pedestrian zocalo (square) with
cafes, entertainment, strolling families, the cathedral. The city is
Spanish colonial in its architecture - loaded with museums and ornate churches. The
largest open market in the Americas. Open, smiling people, loads of
culture.
The area is surrounded by Indians ruins and artisan villages - pottery,
weaving. A great culinary destination as well!
