I don't know if this works, but whenever we travel, we like to just buy food off the street and snack it along the way (breads especially).

Another thing we found that saved us lots of money (in Italy) was do do takeaways and eating it at a park or town square. We found it 50% cheaper than sitting at the crowded cafe.

If you came to Asia (or Singapore for that matter of fact), you can find food courts/hawker centres/coffee shops (and I do not mean Starbucks or Coffee Bean &Tea Leaf) that do things like noodles and rice and stuff like that almost everywhere. US$5 gets you a really full meal.
