British novelist Graham Green liked to stay in this 17th-century convent-turned-residencia, not because of its location (a 10-minute ride from the city center), but because it oozes atmosphere. The floors of marble, worn smooth by centuries of padding feet, are brightened by Arraiolos carpets. Ceilings are vaulted and walls are wainscoted in decorative tiles The quietest of the 34 rooms face the palm-shaded courtyard. Doubles $114-$148; dinner for two $67.
