I hope you are planning on visiting Kukenhof gardens right out of Amsterdam#they are absoulutely beautiful and the time of year you are going is exactly
the right season. In Amsterdam I have stayed at the Park Hotel which is
a nice clean large hotel with less character but good values and location
near the Museums. My favorite place to stay there is at the Ambassade
(http://www.ambassade-hotel.nl/ambeng.html) which is a beautiful Canal
house type hotel offering a lot of ambience and charm, great location
, staff and more. The breakfast is wonderful and is served in an elegant
room that has an amazing view. They offer free bikes and this is a one
of a kind Amsterdam experience--get on a bike and see the city!
In Amsterdam I recommend visiting Begijnhof, all the Museums, The Ann
Frank house. Take the Circle tram #20 for a nice orientation to the city.
Also take the Museum Canal Boat. There is a wonderful Walk outlined at
the VVV ( tourist center) that takes you past all the interesting sites
and this is available for free. Monday thought Saturday between 10 am
and 4 PM there is a great flea Market in Waterlooplein . Some restaurants
I like in the City are : Casa di David @ 462 singel and cafe Toscanini
@ 75 Lindergracht. Don't forget to try some Dutch Pancakes .
Maastricht is a beautiful city with a decidely different feel to it from
the rest of The Netherlands--there are actual rolling hills in the region.
Be sure to visit the Marl Caves while there--they are very interesting!
Leiden and Haarlem are really nice towns worthy of a visit and they are
very close to Amsterdam. Also Den Hague--visit the Mesdag Panorama fora
real treat. Also in Den Hague is a wonderful Dutch Indonesian restaruant
called DeWata ( it is in the square @ Beeklaan where it crosses Weinarstraat)
that I highly reccommend.
In Brugge I stayed at the Hotel de Orangerie (http://www.europages.com/cat/_ec_orangerie.html#haut)
and it was very elegant with a great location and very costly! Be sure
to take the canal tours for a great orientation to Brugge. They say the
French fries are a must have but i found them to be rather mediocre and
not worth the calories!
Your trip sounds wonderful have a great time,
Amelia in Los Angeles
