There are three compelling reasons to visit Orvieto, however. The Duomo is unforgettable, especially if you like lots of gold, and color; The views down onto the valley below are also terrific; and most of all, there is a gelati shop there that is as good as it gets; in my opinion, better than Vivoli, Giolati's, and some of the other well known ones. The only one in its league, as far as I'm concerned, is Paolo's in Verona, and I've heard that Paolo retired to South America and left the business to his kids. Gelati is something I take very seriously!!! There is a wonderful book entitled something like, the Gourmet Food lover's guide to Italy, by Fred Plotkin, I think. It is a great resource.
