Subject: Costa Rica
Charlie, we spent four marvelous days in Costa Rica over Thanksgiving--our first trip there and much too brief. We plan to return! Are you going on your own with a rental car or as part of a tour? We only had time for a bit of San Jose plus the area around La Fortuna--do be sure to spent some time at Tabacon Hot Springs (11 wonderful pools of varying temperatures--sitting under a hot waterfall is wonderful). We enjoyed hiking to Fortuna waterfall and having a refreshing swim under a cold waterfall here. We were lucky to have a perfectly clear day/night to see Arenal Volcano--magnificent at midnight. The flora and fauna are magnificent; if you are a bird watcher you will be overjoyed. We saw iguanas in the trees, a 3-toed sloth, many toucans, all sorts of hummingbirds, a gorgeous tarantula and so much more. Buy some coffee beans; we are still enjoying our Costa Rican coffee. Some of our party went on a tree canopy adventure, swinging (sort of--not like Tarzan) from treetop to treetop and loved it. If you are going between now and end of March, you will be in best season--usually clear and not rainy. We enjoyed the food, the people, the scenery--in other words, everything. Next time we hope to get to more of the rain forest areas and to the Pacific Coast. Enjoy! Cheers, Pat in Baltimore
