I agree with the general concensus here of NOT doing a first trip to
Italy in a tour group that will herd you around and rush you from place
to place.(From what I read, it doesn't sound like a vacation to me).
Pick two or three cities that you think you will enjoy, whether the
popular three (Venice Rome and Florence) Or stay in the Tuscany and do
day trips to Assisi, Florence, Pisa and the like. You could easily spend
the week in Rome. American Express has some wonderful 1/2 and full day
tours that show you around and give you loads of information without
tying yourself to a tour group for the entire stay.
Whatever you decide, you will love Italy. You can always go back again,
to catch what you missed on this trip.
