Verona is one of my favorite cities in Italy. We often go there just to
stroll around the elegant shopping area, stopping at the Piazza d' Erbe
for the best French fries in the world. (They must be really bad for
you, but.... And by the way, none of the other food at the stands there
is any good.) The Piazza dei Signori is amazingly beautiful and there
is a place to sit outside for a coffee or a glass of wine. The arena is
fascinating, and there is a wonderful old church out of the main tourist
area - San Zeno Maggiore - that I am particularly fond of. The Roman
theatre is a bit difficult for walking, but easily seen from the
opposite side of the river.
I think it would be about 1.5 to 2 hours drive to Venice.
