I'm feeling the need to clarify... I never felt unsafe in Guatemala, had no unpleasant experiences whatsoever, and went off the beaten track numerous times - and I don't ever travel with groups or guides unless it's a necessity like in the jungle. I didn't want to give the impression it was dangerous or unsavory or unpleasant - just that it was not a resort type destination. I had a fabulous time in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua and intend to return.
