the biglietto chilometrico is indeed the best deal for the
italian railways by far (at least when bought in Italy---I bought mine in
for comparison, the second-class version costs ~115000 lit (~62us$) and up to 5 people can use it. the first class version of the biglietto is a waste of money. you are only left standing if you travel in intercity or eurostar trains, not in treni ordinarii. buy the second class pass, and when you happen to take an intercity or eurostar (not frequently in my trip) you just pay ~2.5us$ for each seat reservation. given that you have to stand in line anyway, why not save some money---you'll have plenty of opportunities to spend it more enjoyably nella meravigliosa Italia.

hi Larry, l was in Italy last year, all by train, get a Kilometer train pass, its good for 20 single trips and 3000K. Make sure you get a lst class or you will be standing in the aisles like l had to. Even on the supplement tickets. You get it stamped before you get on the train so go early and line up at the wickets and have your passport with you. They stamp off a section and mark the kilometers off. Its the best way to travel. Diane
