Subject: San Gimignano
Once again, I seem to be in the minority, but I found San Gimignano to be a terrible disappointment. Even in April, before the tourist season, there was hardly room to walk, and certainly no place to eat without a long wait. Virtually every shop was a tourist shop, with all kinds of stuff that you wonder what was I thinking about when you get home. We decided that the way to enjoy San Gimignano was from afar. Get a picnic lunch and drive toward the city until you have a wonderful view. Then park the car, get out your picnic and enjoy the view, without the crowds and tourist junk.

Volterra was much more interesting to me, as were Radicofani and Bagno Vignoni.

Off to Italy tomorrow - Cortona and environs, then Trieste, Slovenia and Venice.
