Subject: Re: Pickpockets Italy
We have travelled to Italy a number of times and were concerned, but with some precautions have been very lucky. I did have my wallet taken in the Florence train station, but it followed a foolish action on my part so I kind of set myself up. I travel with a purse that zips closed and a waist (fanny) pack that zips closed. When I know we will be in heavy traffic or I might be distracted I use a large safety pin to pin the zippers to the handle. It takes a little effort than just slipping it open. I still use a waist money belt for cash and travellers checks and I don't use a back pack. We did purchase a small one in London, but I plan only to use it for rain gear and tour books. With all the trips we have taken I only had one bad experience. I suggest you wear your purse over your shoulder from side to side not just hanging from one shoulder. Just be alert and aware and have a good trip.
