My favorite city for cafes is definitely Budapest. From the homey warm
atmosphere of the Cafe Ruszwurm (get there early) in the Castle District to
the dark wood-paneled nooks of the Cafe Angelika (next to the Danube on the
Buda side) to the wonderful outdoor tables of the cosmopolitan Cafe Muvesz
on tree-lined Andrassy utca Budapest's cafes offer the best old-world charm.
As far as I'm concerned they beat Vienna's more famous cafes hands down.
The best individual espresso I've ever had was on the last trip we made to Barcelona. The name of the restaurant was Sopeta Una (Verdaguer i Callis) located very near the Palau Musica (interestingly enough the best meal on the trip as well). It was made from a machine with a hand-pump lever (requiring the makers undivided attention). It was dense and balanced, and I saw the staff drinking it too. John Rule San Diego, CA |
