Here's my list of Wales accommodations. Note prices are not up to date.



Hotel Portmeirion, Portmeirion, Gwynedd, Wales; (0766)770228. Set in a fantasy village built in northwest Wales in the 1920s. Recently gone through extensive renovation. Most splendid rooms are the Peacock Suite and the Indian Room. Doubles from $95. Nearby Snowdonia Narional Park.

Tyddyn Llan, Llandrillo, near Corwen, Clwyd, Wales; (049084)264. Renovated Georgian gray stone farmhouse with ten cozy bedrooms, two informal sitting rooms, a tiny bar and a new blue and yellow dining room. In a beautiful and peaceful place. Expensive.

Pale Hall, Llandderfel, near Bala, Gwynedd, Wales; (067)83285. A golden stone Victorian mansion in north Wales. Has the air of a well loved country home with 17 comfortable bedrooms. Most popular is the Victoria Suite. Salmon and trout fishing, riding, shooting and golf can be arranged. Guests are made to feel very much at home. Expensive.

Llanwenarth House, Govilon, Abergavenny, Gwent, Wales; (0873)830289. A traditional Welsh country house. Goes back to the 16th century. Five guest rooms, each with its own bath, and a relaxed atmosphere where guests soon get to know one another. Family grows its own vegetables and fowl. Expensive.

Plas Bodegroes, Near Pwllheli, Gwynedd, Wales; (0758)612363. An informal, lovely Georgian home on the Atlantic Ocean and the sandy beaches of the Lleyn peninsula. The owner is considered the best chef in Wales! Expensive.

Llangoed Hall, Llyswen, Brecon, Powys, Wales (0874)754525. A grand stone mansion originally built during World War I. Owned and operated by Sir Bernard Ashley of the Laura Ashley Group. He wanted to establish a country house hotel the atmosphere of an Edwardian house party. Emphasis is on comfort and service and fresh flowers everywhere. Expensive.




Tides Reach Guest House, 388 Mumbles Road, Mumbles, Swansea, SA3 5TN, Phone: (0792) 404877. Manager: Mrs. Jan Mayberry. A delightful B &B, beautifully furnished. $22 per person. I especially loved this place and the wonderful antiques.

Beach House Hotel, 734 Mumbles Road, Mumbles, Swansea SA3 4EL, phone: (0792) 367650. Manager: Miss Caroline Evans. Across from the sea at end of downtown area. Old world charm. Breakfast included. Rooms with bathrooms: $27 per person.

Norton House Hotel, Norton Road, Mumbles, Swansea, West Glam. Phone: (0792) 404891. Original Norton House built in 1713. This house rebuilt before 1800, sits on its own grounds. Has a passage said to lead to Oystermouth Castle. The house is believed to have been the haunt of smugglers during the 18th century. A beautiful Georgian restoration. All rooms with private bath, color television and phone. Breakfast not included. Single: $60; double: $95.

Mermaid Hotel, Mumbles, Swansea, phone: (0792) 368125. Charming hotel across from the sea. Breakfast included. Single without bathroom: $25, with bathroom: $35; double with bathroom: $55.

Nicholston House, Nicholston, Gower, Swansea. On the beach at Gower. Moderately priced.

Oxwich Bay Hotel, Oxwich Bay, Gower, West Glam. SA3 1LS; (0792)390329. Great location, right on the beach. Need car to get here. No lobby, but lots of cocktail lounge space, and large diningroom. Dinner, bed and breakfast, per person, low season: $42; dinner, bed and breakfast, per person, July and August: $45.

Uplands Court Guest House, 134 Eaton Crescent, Uplands, Swansea, phone: (0792) 473046. Managers: Mr. &Mrs. Nolan. Large, attractive guest house near the main Swansea/Gower road, convenient for Swansea City. Moderately priced.
