We use Fodor's Rivage Bks for B&B's of Character and Charm in France and, for larger accommodations, (and usually more formal) we have used Hotels and Country Inns of Character... (amongst other publications) We've used both successfully, after learing to read between the lines in the descriptions. Each property listed has a picture also. The Guide Routard (all in French) is truly wonderful - for small B&B's, Gites and interesting, informal properties. These books are regional and plentiful - They also list restaurants and must see's in the area. We have only used them in rural France and find them wonderful to meet and be with the French or other foreigners.
