|Subject: hotel in Venice|
The hotel in Venice I referred to in my original post is:
Ponte dell' Angelo
It is a three minute walk to the Basilica in Piazza San Marco and is located where the canal that passes under the Bridge of Sighs forks. Consequently you can see all the gondolas that pass by your window on this narrow canal (assuming you are on the view side of the hotel), and of course you can hear all the serenading. Location is outstanding as you are minutes from Piazza San Marco and a ten minute walk from the Rialto Bridge area also. There is nothing like early morning or late at night in Piazza San Marco when it is deserted. I highly recommend the 7:00 AM Mass in the Basilica even if you are not at all religious. No crowds and you have the beautiful mosaics of the Basilica all to yourself, for quiet reflection. Quite a contrast from the mid-afternoon hour plus wait with the tour crowds.
I stay in one of the two 4th floor double rooms with view and adjoining bath. Cost this October is L140,000 for double with breakfast included. Breakfast room is ON the canal. Cautions: 1. No elevator but beautiful narrow marble hallways 2. Little or no English spoken 3. No credit cards - requires deposit by Traveler's Check (US $ OK) 4. Reconfirm price and reservations before arrival Paul in Connecticut
