Subject: Re: HOTELS
Hi Grace, I wasn't suggesting that the TCI books should be used as a reference only that its store in Rome is a traveler's dream. One can find maps of all kinds and especially those of which I am especially fond: The ones of individual Provinces and those of particular areas such as the ones for Castelli Romani and the Sorrento Peninsula for example. The TCI guidebook for Italy has several excellent driving tours.

Speaking of word of mouth. A couple of years ago a friend strongly suggested that we stay at Del Sole al Pantheon in Rome on an upcoming trip. So we made reservations. Enroute to Rome we spent a couple of days in Madrid and a couple of day in Santander, Spain. At a cocktail party in Santander, a business acqaintance from England spoke glowingly about the Holiday Inn Minerva, saying that this was not like a Holiday Inn that one normally thinks about. Anyway once in Rome we checked into the Del Sole al Pantheon. It was terrible. It was about 10 o'clock at night so we couldn't move out. Early the next morning, we checked out and dragged our luggage to the Crowne Plaza Roma Minerva (the Holiday Inn I was told about in Santander) where we were lucky to find a room. We like this hotel a great deal and have been back three times since that time. However, the last time was last November at which time we found it is getting a little threadwork but is still quite nice. Next time in Rome we will stay at the Farnese Hotel even though the location is not as good as the Minerva.

So much for work of mouth. One recommended hotel was terrible and one was great. Further these two hotels are within a few steps of each other.
