|Subject: Vat on tax for Car rentals|
We just received our confirmation of the amount charged on our credit card bill for the recent rental in Amsterdam with Auto Europe. The charged amount was about $29 (USD) more than the initial invoice stated.
After a call to Auto Europe, I discovered that the Netherlands, Germany, and one other country prefer to collect their VAT and Airport surcharge directly, rather than get it from Auto Europe.
Consequesntly, the VAT was charged on the rental and then the VAT was charged on the airport pick-up premium, and that accounted for the difference.
It would have been nice had we been alerted to this charge. The airport surcharge amounted to about $28 which is about what we (two) probably would have paid for a taxi to the mysterious location of the city office--on Overtoom, somewhere near the Marriott hotel, near Vondel Park.
So, in the long run--we came out about equal, but I always like to know ahead of time. No surprise, please.
