|Subject: Truffles (real ones, not chocolate)|
I want to share with you a well kept secret.
About 30 miles south of Trieste, right after crossing the border between
Slovenia and Croatia, there's a hill area with little towns perched on top
of those hills. The names are unfamiliar to most (Kastel, Buje, Groznijan
to name a few) but there you can taste a very good white truffle for half
the price you pay in Umbria or Piedmont. The restaurants are essential, the
homemade cooking is very raw, but a plate of tagliatelle with a generous
amount of sliced truffle on it is a great treat. It used to be a lot more
cheaper a few years ago, but it's still a deal.
You can enjoy also grilled meat of all kinds (boar and deer included).
Buon appetito! Paolo
