PAt, four wheel drive is only needed if you plan on driving off-road.
Somthing first time visitors probably wont do. However try to rent a
car that can handle some dirt roads if needed. The dirt roads are
level and in very good shape, just dusty. The Siera club and also
GORP have web sites with links to area info.Make sure to bring lot's
of water with you in case you need it.As well as #30 or better sun
block, and hats. The desert is still an unforgiving locale. For
accomadations they are all about the same except the Lodge of course
which I have no personal experience with. Plan $50 -$70 a night for a
clean modern motel for two. you do not need anything more then a bed,
a/c, and a shower. You will be outside most of the time. My hotel
info is so outdated it is worthless so I wont bother to post it. AAA
or Mobil guides are the best bet for this type of travel. Airfare is
high this summer with coast to coast around $400. you may find it
cheaper to fly into Salt Lake or Phoenix and then drive a bit. If
not, LA to Grand Canyon is a about 8-10 hours from what I remember
but check that.
