|Subject: Vacation Home Rentals in the North of England|
Some of you have asked me for specifics on vacation homes that we have
rented in the Lake District and the North York Moors, so here it is:
The National Trust: We have twice rented the same restored 3-bdrm.farm high on a lonely moor in Bransdale, North York Moor from the National Trust, and if High Lidmoor Farm is any indication of quality and service from the NT, we can heartily recommend them. This farm has had a wonderful, but not glitzy restoration (I wish my kitchen were as well-designed and furnished, however! - washer/dryer, microwave, stove, dishwasher, refrig., separate freezer, nice dishes and cookware, lots of counter space) You have the run of the farm buildings, the 17th century piggeries (clean!), the understeps dog kennel, the attached barns, etc. Plus glorious moorland scenery all around. A neighboring farmer's wife is the NT caretaker for the property and has become a good friend; she did so many little extras for us, like inviting us to local gatherings, showing us her farmhouse, taking us out one night to her favorite local pubs. The NT provides a bottle of wine (waiting for you in the house) for anyone having a birthday or anniversary at no charge (a different gift for children's birthdays!). To phone for brochures from U.S.: 011-44-1225-791133 for bookings from U.S.: 011-44-1225-791199 fax: 1225-792267
In Lastingham, North York Moors: Lastingham is a lovely little quiet village with a historic church, a pub, a green, a stream. Twice we have rented Brook Cottage (3/4 bedrooms, lovely walled garden) from the owner who lives next door. You can write to her for information or the the agent she is now using: Owner -- Mrs. A. Cattle, Littlegarth, Lastingham, York, YO62 6TJ 011-44-17551-417223/ agent -- Sykes Cottages, 011-44-1244-345700. Mrs. Cattle also has 2 other properties that she owns in the village and will rent out. The house looks terrific! The little chalet in Littlegarth garden does not particularly appeal to me, but always seems to be rented.
In the Lake District: Five times we have rented two properties on the Wyke Estate, on Lake Grasmere, in the heart of the Lake District in Grasmere--70acres of gardens + a Victorian Mansion where owner resides. There is Badger Cottage, sleeps 3 max., behind the big house--very light and airy with woodburning fireplace--a cozy place to be. Then there is the spectacular Wyke Cottage, a 17th century stone house in its own lovely gardens and views out at Lake Grasmere and the mountains beyond. This is the oldest house in Grasmere and is featured often in photos and paintings in magazines, calendars, etc. Wordsworth mentions it in one of his poems and his sister, Dorothy Wordsworth, writes of it in her jounals. There is marvelous walking and climbing right from the doorstep, the village for most supplies 1/2 mile away, good pubs, live theatre and music in the summer. It is our favorite place. Wyke Cottage has 2 bedrooms up an old inside winding stone staircase, a living room with woodburning fireplace, dining room, kitchen (not fancy, but with the basics), separate toilet, separate bathroom with tub/shower combination. Outdoor furniture is provided at both Wyke properties. Bookings handled by small local-area agent, Wheelwrights, Elterwater, Nr. Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 9HS. Another agent that has many many listings for properties to rent in the Lake District is Cumbrian Cottages, Ltd. http://www.cumbrian-cottages.co.uk I have not rented from them.
