Subject: Glimmerglass opera...
For 5 glorious days every summer we head out to Cooperstown, New York for the Glimmerglass Opera. Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but is also an east coast mecca for the summer opera!

The town was settled by the Clarks, Busch's and Kellogs and is as pristine as it comes - beautiful rolling hills and glorious mansions (although most are hidden) -- on Lake Otsego. The opera is very professional and always well-attended - stars from all over the world including the Met come. The costumes, stage settings and new opera house (modeled with a barn look) make this a perfect respite in the middle of nowhere! We go for one of three weekends where each of the four operas is presented - Thurs, Fri and Sat and then Sunday matinée -- This year's choices were La Bohème, The Glass Blowers, Acis and Galatea and ending withe the stirring... Salome!

There is the James Fenimore Cooper museum (a marvelous stone ediface) that houses the second best Native American exhibit we've ever seen (first one at the Hurd (sp??) in Arizona) -- Also, it has a permanent Abby Rockefeller folk art collection - with this year's exhibit being Edward Hicks paintings and across the street is a wonderful farm implement museum. There are zillions on antique stores and shopping with the emphasis on baseball - but it's a terrific area!

There are good restaurants, antiquing and wonderful B&B's and the Clark family built a terrific gym with pool - for all those devotée's of working out.

Our favorite B&B which we go to every year is called Thistlebrook - It is air-conditioned, has fantastic breakfasts and wonderful ambiance!!! There are room sizes and appointments to fit every taste and Paula and Jim are terrific hosts - very warm and helpful without being intrusive - unless one wants that!
