Subject: Re: Indonesian itinerary
I have been twice to Jogya, once in 1955 and again about ten years ago. I also visited Surabaya in 1955 and I would certainly recommend Jogya over Surabaya. You could easily spend two weeks in the Jogya area alone, as there is lots to see - Borobudur, Prambanan, the Sultan's palace, the Deng Plateau, Surakarta (Solo), just to mention a few places. There are also many artisans doing batik, silverware, jewellry, plus lots of theatre and dancing. If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to try and answer them, although my information may be a bit dated. We stayed at the Petit Mas, which I would recommend, although it is only two doors down from a mosque so you'll be woken up at about 4:30 AM every morning. I think we spend about ten days in Jogya on our last visit.
