Although we stayed only three days in Kathmandu (and the weather was
awful, monsoon all the time), I must say that I really enjoy that
time and that I hope to be back there, on our own next time.
During that time, I ask our Nepali tour guide (we were very happy with him) if it was difficult to go on your own, and he told me that it should be easy enough, with plenty of trekking agencies. Afterwards I have talked to a friend that went there last October. They had prebooked a trekking tour thru a mountain equipment shop here, in Spain. They stayed for two weeks in the Annapurna region and they really enjoyed it. He says that it wasn´t so cold as they had thought. In Kathmandu they stayed at the Hotel Sherpa. It wasn´t expensive and central, near Durbar Marg, I think. We checked it while walking during our free day, and it looked quite OK. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, and although far away of the city (I would have chosen the Yak and Yeti), the swimming pool and the italian restaurant were really great. Regards from Spain.
