FWIW,
Growing up in the Detroit/Windsor, Canada, environs, I had the regular
(if somehow also exotic) experience of seeing The Lights in the northern
sky, sometimes in late summer.
But having long ago seen the light and moved to the West Coast
the most recent viewing was through the window of a TWA 747, x thousand
feet up, some 10 years or so ago, traveling to London for New Year's.
Even got 'em on video then, though the whereabouts or even existence of
that tape is
unknown now. Bet you could buy some electronic medium that features the
phenomenon, though, so you could conjure up the NLs on a whim...or on
your teevee.
