Gail - we hike all over the place and love our Adirondacks and White Mountains in the east like you love your Oregon forests, etc -- However, there is always something special about hiking up to 9 - 10,000 feet and finding yourself in the beauty and solitude of a pristine emerald green or or azure blue lake ringed by mts. (You might consider the Pyrénées... We've been going every fall and we're hooked to be sure!~)
