Grace--Have you thought about staying in Pozzuoli? Coming from the south you could drive around Napoli (the east side of Vesuvius) thereby missing most of the very heavy traffic that Napoli presents. The drive to Sorrento from the south and from Sorrento to the airport will no doubt be clogged with heavy traffic. I don't think that Pozzuoli has the attractiveness of Sorrento, but there are several sites that look interesting to see--the large amphitheater is one that quickly comes to mind. Procida and Ischia could also be interesting to see from the Pozzuoli base. While I have never been to any of those places, I am just suggesting these as ideas upon looking at my map of the Province of Napoli. The drive along the Amalfi Coast, then over the mountain road to Sorrento, presents some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, but those narrow, winding roads are quite challenging. While the road from Sorrento to Napoli is better and presents some marvelous views, it too presents some challenges to the driver. I have driven over these latter roads. The autostrada from Pozzuoli to the airport skirts Napoli proper so the traffic shouldn't be too bad. The drive shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Just a thought. Peter |
