Subject: Spiritual places
Italy is full of historical abbeys and monasteries set in lonely places, on top of hills or in the deep shadow of valleys. Almost any Italian region has at least one: most of them are listed in any tourbook, but the most famous ones are often crowded by visitors in tourist season. My favorites are Camaldoli, near Florence, Fonte Avellana, not far from Gubbio, Pomposa , on the old road from Venice to Rome and S.Pietro in Valle, near Terni, and the wonderful Sacra di S. Michele, close to Torino.

The Orthodox churches in Greece are very different from Italian ones because of their golden and silver decorations and forests of burning candles in sand boxes; I visited just a few ones so I can't really suggest any.
