I just checked with my agent - he said State Farm covers the U.S., Canada and
15 miles into Mexico. He told me State Farm was a big presence in Canada.
(And this was without me telling him who I was, so it's not just my policy.)
He said that the U.S. insurance doesn't cover you of you rent a car in Europe
though. I think your friends misunderstood or their agent is confused.
