|Subject: part II - christkindlmarkt tour|
our next scheduled stop after nurnberg, was the village of zweisel in
the bayerischer wald. to get there, we traveled southeast on autobahn
a3, through regensburg and on to deggendorf where we exited. zweisel is
situated near the border with czech republic. it is also a centre for
many glass blowers and small firms, along with grafenau and frauenau.
while here, we stopped at 1/2 dozen firms looking and purchasing vases,
paper weights, etc. some of the larger items were shipped home, while
the small paper weights were taken along. just outside of zweisel we
stopped at bayerwald-barwurzerei, a business that produces 26 bavarian
liqueurs that can be sampled and purchased...we did both! with the
weather remaining mild and the sun out, we had a glorious drive south to
passau. for those unfamiliar with this university town, it is situated
at the confluence of the inn, ilz and danube rivers and is quite
possibly one of the most beautifully located towns in all of europe.
from the cadogan guide.....napolean felt it was quite the most
beautiful town he had overrun in all of germany, alexander von humboldt
ranked passau among the seven most beautifully situated cities in the
world. try to imagine looking out your 2nd floor hotel room window
(alstadt hotel) at the danube river while barge traffic goes by; with
the veste oberhaus (medieval fortress which looms over the town on a
rocky outcrop across the danube) as a backdrop. go to passau!
