Here's the website for Hostels in Italy:
One of the best hostels I've enjoyed is on Lake Como, at Menaggio. What a great place! Clean, easy to find, good location, nice commons, lots of ages and nationalities.
My sister (our standards are pretty low, so when she doesn't like a place, it's scary) did not like the hostel in Rome (noisy, dirty, crowded).
The hostel in Riomaggiore is the only one I know of in Cinque Terre; good location, but the owner's son (who manages the place) is a real cat fancier & I swear the place smells like cats. The showers were pretty awful; lights went out one night when my sister was in the shower, not a pleasant experience! But the price is right.
