Have you considered going straight to Bergamo when you arrive in Milan? It's a charming small city about 65 miles northeast of Milan and not too difficult to reach by train. There are some trains from the Central station, and others from Garibaldi station, which is easy to reach on the subway.
Bergamo has an old town, which is up on a hill (Citta Alta) and a newer part of town down the hill (Citta Bassa). It's worth an overnight, maybe two, and is cheaper than Milan.
