We travelled to Lucca last summer and very much liked the area.
I would particularly recomend San Frediano's church and St Zito's tomb and the Amphitheatre. It is a lovely unspoilt city. Have a walk round the outside, the houses are built into the walls of the Roman Amphitheatre.
Also the locals jog, cycle, and walk round the city walls on a summer's evening - very pleasant.
If you have time drive north into the mountains - the Pescia valley is very beautiful. But maybe you know this already?
