First of all...you're going to love Lucca.
As I recall, the hotels and shops outside the walls aren't that near
the train station. Can't say for sure, but I don't think noise would
be much of a problem.
Still, I'd recommend investigating hotels inside the walls. The walk
would be easy from the station, but the area outside the walled city
is pretty charmless--whereas it's positively delightful inside. I
tried to stay at the Piccolo Hotel Puccini but it was booked up (V.
di Poggio 9, 0583/49-22-02). My guidebook says they can arrange for
When in Lucca, consider eating at Da Giulio (V. di Conce 45). A
sensational restaurant! Another fun thing to do is to rent bikes and
ride the promenade on top of the city walls.
