It has been two years since I have been in Lucca (one of my most favorite
cities) but I do recall that the Rex is quite close to the city wall and
only a few steps to Piazza Victor Emanuel. This piazza is one of the
entrances to the old city of Lucca. I don't know how heavily the train
station is used but I doubt whether it would be busy or noise problem.
Walking inside the old city is a delightful experience as is enjoying a coffee and a snack at many of the nice outdoor cafes. Too, there is no shortage of pleasant trattorie and the restaurant La Buca di Sant'Antonio is excellent. There are also wonderful pastry and sweets shops to be found inside the walls. A short ride out of town in Ponte a Moriano there is an outstanding restaurant: La Mora. The wine list at La Mora is memorable.
