Subject: English in Slovenia
Hi Beth,

Linda and I speak only English but have never had any language difficulties in either Germany or Slovenia. Most Slovenians, especially the younger generation, speak at least one other language, usually German or English.

The magic phrase in Slovenian is DOBER DAN, which means hello, good day and good afternoon. Good Evening is DOBER VECER (pronounced dober vecher) and thank you is KVALA (before a vowel, the letter V is pronounced as a W).

If you enjoy language learning, there's a page you might want to print and take with you at: http://www.ijs.si//lit/slovene.html#greet

There was never a time when we felt at a loss without knowing more than the few polite basics, a common courtesy in any country.

Regards, Don
