|Subject: Re: Bilbao to Barcelona|
Last year we did a similar trip only in reverse, from Barcelona to Bilbao
along the Pyrenees. From Barcelona we headed north to France for a couple
of days. Then we returned by way of Andorra (stopping for a day of skiing).
Then we headed back to Spain driving northwesterly through Aragon crossing
one river valley after another towards the Basque Country. A spectacular
(albeit long and windy) drive. Along the way we visited the small town
of Ainsa (charming), stayed in Jaca (where a very nice young woman gave
us a tour of the citadel), toured the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peņa
(impressive early guardian site of the Holy Grail), passing through Navarre
we stopped at the Monasterio de Leyre (listening to the monks' service
in a Gregorian chant), and, finally passing north through the beautiful
Valle de Bidasoa before ending this portion of our trip in Hondarribia.
We did all of this in two days but could easily have stretched it to four. If you have the time I highly recommend the drive over the train.
