Trying to avoid Boston and the Big Dig congestion? Pick the least evil.
You can fly nonstop from LA (LAX) to Boston (BOS) and rent a car. Most convenient flying, no plane changes etc.
Or you can fly to no hassle airports with Southwest Airlines and cheap airfare to boot. Fly from LAX into Providence RI (PVD) and rent a car and drive to Wood's Hole/Falmouth MA for the ferry for Martha's Vineyard (or take a puddle jumper from Providence to the Vineyard). When leaving from Portland Maine you can fly Southwest Airlines back to LA by flying out of Manchester NH (MHT). Only problem: Flying Southwest requires 3 flights each way (2 plane changes).
If I were doing this trip, I would fly nonstop to Boston and rent a car. Martha's Vineyard ferry is about 1 1/2 hour drive south of Boston, and Portland, Maine is about 1 1/2 hour north of Boston. If you belong to AAA, they can do a TripTik driving pack for you which makes driving directions very easy.
