Beth, I'd stay at the Copthorne Hotel (it has a longer name--maybe a second
name in front of it--it keeps changing as it changes ownership) that is
near the airport, but on many, many acres of its own grounds, with lovely
gardens, paths, ponds, swans, etc. Part of the hotel is very old (Elizabethan??)
and part very new---if possible, ask for a room in old part (beautifully
renovated with beams and such). It is very very lovely and a marvelous
respite from the hecticness of the airport--yet, there is transportation
to hotel from airport. We have happy memories of it after missing a flight
and having an unwanted (but delightful) 24-hr. delay a number of years
ago. Gatwick is near Crawley in W. Sussex. After you have a chance to
nap a bit, there are so many things to see in the area, very close by--stately
homes and such (if they are open--due to hoof and mouth disease, many
are closed). We have friends in the area and stay there often. The concierage
at the hotel can suggest things within just a short drive that will fill
up your day. The Copthorne has lovely dining rooms for a peaceful, quiet
way to end a busy travel day. You do not have to settle for a bustling
airport hotel. (Yet, somehow, the Copthorne is considered an airport hotel
because of its proximity but is absolutely nothing like one!) Enjoy--Pat
