While recently in Spain and Portugal we were totally baffled by
proper tipping procedures. We found some restaurants added a
tip to the bill, pastry shops or smaller restaurants had a jar at the
cash register and in other restaurants, it was left to the discretion
of the individual customer. We watched and some customers
tipped and some didn't. We were also told not to tip tour guides,
bellboys, housekeeping staff etc. but simply ignored the direction
and used our own judgment. Can someone clarify tipping
customs in these countries for us?
