Air travel in the US is indeed totally incomprehensible.

There is, however, an option for you as a non-US resident: Visit the USA fares. They are only available for sale outside the US &permit multiple stops. It's an airpass system; the traveler purchases a coupon book permitting 4-8 stops. The 4-coupon high season book on United is about 1000126 ITL, or about $470USD.
