Well, Doug and Andrew.... I don't really agree with you. Unless you have an hotel away from the center, you won't need to travel by subway that much. In fact, as you know, most of the tourist attractions are in the same small area, and one next to the other. The best way to visit them is walking. Furthermore, excepted for the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps, all the rest is not served by the subway.
It may be useful to take a bus to the Vatican, or to the catacombs, that's all!
