This is rather loosely connected to your interests, but I think you might enjoy the novel I am currently reading: Cause Celeb by Helen Fielding. The story concerns relief work in Africa, in some fictionalized areas that seem very like the war torn parts of East and Central Africa, from what I have read.

Fielding wrote this book before her smashing success with Bridget Jones, and it is very different from the B. Jones novels. Tragic and gripping, I would say.

I think you would find the very detailed look at life in African relief camps very interesting. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in life in London or Africa; the novel is set in both places.
