I agree completely with the statement Andrew made about driving in large cities.
I have not driven in Italy, but in France we found the driving to be reasonably relaxed. We stuck, in the main, to the smaller scenic secondary roads. If you use the toll roads and motorways I can't see there being much of a problem. You soon get into the 'swing' of things. Of course you have the added advantage of driving on the same side of the road as most European countries. I hope this helps.
