Hotel: Porto Roca, Via Corone 1, Monterosso al Mare, 19016 La Spezia, Italy; 39-187- 817502. Amenities include a friendly staff, decent restqaurant, comfortable, if not opulent, rooms and a spectacular view of the coastline. Dubles $120-$165 per night. The hotel will send its minibus if you call from the train station. Hotel Jolie, Via Gioberti 1, Monterosso, 19016 La Spezia; 39-187-817539. A modest, warm- feeling place with a small orange-tree filled garden and a quiet location a few blocks from the beach. Doubles $60-$76 per person, including breakfast and dinner. Hotel Villa Steno, Monterosso: Via Roma 109; 19016 Monterosa al mare; 39-187/817-028. Features great balconies, private gardens off some rooms, and the friendly help of English- speaking Matteo. A 10-minute hike from the station, the hotel features 16 rooms, easy telephone reservations, televisions an telephones. A double costs $100. Marina Piccola, Via Antonio Discovolo, Manarola, 39-187-920103. Basic accommodations in the middle of town, overlooking the sea, with one of the region's better restaurants attached. Double $70. Bright, modern rooms right on the water. Albergo ca d'Andrean, Via A. Discovolo, ICI 19010 Manarola (La Spezia) 39-187/920-040. A quiet comfortable and modern place. Its ambience evokes the feeling that one is in a true hotel, with 10 rooms and a cool garden complete with orange trees. A double room costs $80, a single costs $50. English speakers should ask for Simone. Royal Sporting, Portovenere, 90-03-26, is a relatively new hotel at the quiet end of town. What it lacks in character it makes up for in amenities: swimming pool, clay tennis court, parking garage, and a particularly helpful conceirge. Doubles from $160. The Belvedere, Portovenere, 90-06-08, is simple, without a pool but with great vay views and traditional charm. Doubles from $75. The Paradiso, Portovenere, 90-06-12, is on a par with the Belvedere, though well renovated; management seemed to speak no English at all. Doubles from $125 including breakfast and dinner. Genio, Portovenere, 90-06-11, actually one of the town's three ancient towers. Rooms are drab but cheap, views and balconies charming and romantic. Doubles from $60. Pensione Barbara, Vernazza; 812201, a simple, clean place, keys are at the Trattoria del Capitano. Doubles from $37. Gianni Franzi, Vernazza, 812228; has somewhat better rooms at slightly higher prices. Doubles from $50. Trattoria Gianni, Vernazza; 39-187/821-003, rents 14 small simple, comfortable doubles. Each is artfully decorated a la shipwreck--up lots of tight winding, spiral stairs near the castle, where the views are the Mediterranean Doubles cost $60 from March through May. Prices go up in the summer. Call three days in advance and leave your name and arrival time.
