Subject: Re: Train passes, car rentals and insurance for Europe

On our honeymoon we had read that the overnight train from Nairobi to Mombasa is one of the most romantic train trips in the world, so we bit. The food was mediocre at best, the berths were small and the compartment cramped. Of course, we could not see anything out the window. Very disappointing. Next time, we would fly, or even skip Mombasa altogether.

On our trip to Vietnam, we took the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa. The hotel where we made our reservations was nice enough to give us foam pads to sleep on. The compartment had 6 bunks, three stacked on each side. If you were lucky enough to get there early, you got the bottom bunk, which meant that you could store your stuff under the bunk. Over the course of the trip, the temperature went from moderate to very cold. There were rules about how to check out blankets that were hard to understand. We loved the trip, overnight both ways. Great company in our compartment, nice way to make a trip, saved travel time and saved two nights of hotels.
