Great choice - Slovenia - and if the articles you received were indeed from the New York Post, you'll want to read the two that were in the New York Times last Sunday.
There was also a wonderful article in the Seattle Times Travel section on Sunday http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/travel/ We were especially pleased to see that TheTravelzine.com was listed as a resource in the If you go to Slovenia section on another page http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/travel/134324844_slovego05.html
Covadonga's idea of stopping in Graz is a great one! Graz is not far from Bad Radkersburg, across the border from Radenci in Slovenia. The thermal waters in that region are noteworthy and a great way to recover from jet lag.
For reasonably priced accommodation consider staying at a guest house like Marinka's in Strednja Vas for at least part of your trip. Here's what we wrote http://www.thetravelzine.com/slovenia1.htm contact info is here http://www.bohinj.si/tdbohinj/en/apartmaji-hodnik-marinka.htm and for a wide range of similar properties in Bohinj, near Lake Bled, see http://www.bohinj.si/tdbohinj/en/apartmaji.htm There are over 300 farm properties throughout the country that welcome guests.
You can FAX to Slovenia Tourism at +386 (0) 61 - 188 1164 and visit the web site at http://www.slovenia-tourism.si/eindex.htm
Hope that helps, Don and Linda
